The two-time Oscar victor will star in The First, a new Hulu original drama created by Beau Willimon, the mastermind behind the Netflix awards darling House of Cards. Additionally, Penn received Best Actor awards at the Cannes ("She's So Lovely") and Berlin ("Dead Man Walking") Film Festivals, as well as being a two-time victor of Best Actor honors at the Venice Film Festival ("Hurlyburly", "21 Grams").

Penn has guested on several TV shows throughout his celebrated career ("Ellen", "Friends", "Two and a Half Men"), but the Hulu project marks his first role as a series regular.

"I have such deep admiration for Sean's huge talent and extraordinary body of work", said Willimon. The two-time Academy Award winner's role is being kept under wraps, but the show is set to explore the first manned mission to Mars and the colonization of the red planet. "I feel very lucky to be collaborating with an artist of his caliber".

Like the characters in The First, Sean Penn too is entering uncharted territory, making his first foray onto the small screen.

He did take the first step earlier this year though when he took the lead role in the HBO miniseries American Lion as President Andrew Jackson.

The First is a production of Willimon's Westward Productions with partner Jordan Tappis, who will collectively own the series, which was commissioned by Hulu and the UK's Channel 4.

The First is slated to premiere on Hulu in 2018.
