Nisar lashes out at Khaqan Abbasi, Asif for statements on 'internal matters'

Extraordinary security arrangements have been put in place in around the UN Headquarters in NY ahead of the high-level session in which US President Donald Trump will deliver his maiden speech at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Pakistani prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who is reported to be likely to meet with United States vice president Mike Pence in NY on Tuesday, warned his country would retaliate if its alliance was downgraded.

The main opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party made gains but alleged voter irregularities in the eastern city of Lahore, the electoral heartlands of the Sharif family since the 1980s.

Pakistan has threatened to drop United States as a supplier of military aircraft if Washington tries to downgrade its relationship with Islamabad.

We are looking forward for more American companies to invest in diverse fields in Pakistan, the Prime Minister said.

The new Trump policy lays special emphasis on kinetic operations to subdue the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, envisions greater role for India in Afghanistan and the overall regional security. The tirade evoked strong response from Pakistan and plunged the bilateral relationship to one of its lowest ever levels.

"Issuing such statements strengthens the enemy's narrative", he said, adding that similar actions will weaken Pakistan's position internationally.

The recently installed Pakistani leader criticised the diplomatic pivot by Washington, saying it had left Islamabad scrambling to find out about U.S. policy from newspapers.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Other meetings will be with the Jordanian King and leaders of Turkey, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iran, the United Kingdom and Nepal.

It also "advised the relevant print media to carefully review the contents of discussions before reporting".

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will also address the Council on Foreign Relations besides interacting with Pakistan-US Business Council.
