Christopher was a fan favorite in NASCAR's Whelen Modified Series and won several track championships across many levels of racing.

Christopher was one of two passengers aboard the Mooney M20C aircraft traveling from CT to NY when the plane disintegrated near the North Branford-Guilford border just before 2 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: "Heard the news of this just moments after walking into VL".

Christopher was selected as one of the top 25 drivers in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series history in 2006.

Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO, confirmed that Christopher, 59, and the plane's pilot both died.

He made six starts in the NASCAR Cup Series, and he earned respect throughout the NASCAR community.

The FAA is investigating the crash. Christopher was scheduled to race the No. 82 Modified for auto owner Danny Watts at Riverhead on Saturday night. Whitney said Christopher often raced at speed ways in Waterford and Thompson. Throughout the course of his racing career, he drove in all three of NASCAR's main series, but he was most known for his success in the Whelen Modified Tour, where he won the championship in the 2008 season.

France went on to state, "He was a tough racer's racer, and his hard driving style and candid personality endeared him to short track fans throughout the country". "He will be missed throughout the racing community". He will be remembered as one of the greatest Modified drivers of all time.

"The sport of short-track, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Racing ... lost a legend tonight in Ted Christopher", an announcement before the race by Mr. Finan said, according to video posted online. I know that I can speak for everyone here, as well as our entire Speedway Motorsports, Inc. family, when I say that while Teddy may be gone, his legacy will carry on for generations to come. Notably five time NASCAR Driver of the Year Jimmie Johnson tweeted his praise for Christopher while giving his condolences to the late driver's family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Christopher family, and all those impacted by this tragic loss'.
