The Punisher will debut sometime before the year's end, that much we know, but when it comes to a specific due date, Marvel and Netflix have been unusually tight-lipped ever since its first Defender-less solo series was confirmed. But Jumpshot said The Defenders, which premiered August 18, saw a significant drop in viewers in its first month.

According to a Netflix news release, one-eighth of the viewers for the Marvel street-hero series were new to the comic-book genre.

Variety reports that the series premiere of the ensemble series was the least-watched of all of the Marvel shows on Netflix including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

Each of Marvel's Netflix series has a signature style or calling card: Daredevil boasts acrobatic fight scenes;Jessica Jones is sardonic, sexual, and dark;Luke Cage is an allegory about power that's laced with hip-hop; and the mess that is the first season of Iron Fist is all about mystical martial arts. While all three of them performed badly, none performed as poorly as The Defenders did, which is the opposite of what you'd expect given the massive box office returns on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers film.

It seems unlikely this would derail any future plans Netflix might have; indeed, Daredevil is already definitely coming back for a third season, and Jessica Jones (perhaps the most culturally relevant of the four series) is definitely coming back for a second season.
