According to some reports, at the after-party, Spicer was the most popular guy in the room. Not only did his former Press Secretary Sean Spicer come out to say hi, Trump was described as being "beloved by Nazis" (yup), was low-key accused of treason, and was called a "morally compromised antihero".

"This will be the largest audience to witness at Emmys, period, " he said, as he wheeled onto the stage with the lectern used to mock him on Saturday Night Live.

A person familiar with the planning of the Emmy program said on Monday that Colbert and his staff regarded Spicer's appearance as both a joke at the expense of Trump, and also a way to poke fun at the event's host, Stephen Colbert. The Late Night host shocked most of the crowd-Veep actress Anna Chlumsky was particularly amazed-with the selection of one of comedy's favorite targets of the previous year.

James attended the glitzy ceremony in Los Angeles with his wife Julia, and addressing the incident which went viral online, James explained: "The big winners last night were Donald Glover, Hulu and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer".

"That's what you sign up to do", said the former White House press secretary.

Addressing the backlash, The Late Late Show host, 39, added: 'Ever have that feeling when you get drunk, wake up and think, "Oh God, who did I kiss last night?"

Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to Trump, said Spicer was using "alternative facts" when he disputed the inauguration coverage.

The Times did not state specifically the wording of the question Spicer was responding to.

Spicer announced he was leaving the White House earlier this year after Anthony Scaramucci was named communications director. And MSNBC's Chris Hayes tweeted on Sunday night shortly after Spicer's appearance that "power is all about who gets forgiven".

Spicer officially left his White House job last month.

He has reportedly turned down an invitation to appear on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars".
