GROTZ: Lack of running game killed Eagles in loss

Ever-volatile Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce incurred a 15-yard flag for taunting after Kareem Hunt's 53-yard touchdown run. The Eagles held Hunt to 8 yards on five carries in the first half. However, Week 2 was a return to normal for Smith who only threw for 251 yards and one touchdown against the Eagles. That put the Chiefs up 20-13.

The main weak link on the O-line was second-year guard Isaac Seumalo.

"He's got to learn", Reid said.

Finding a spark for the running game, and fixing an offensive line that has now surrendered eight sacks in two weeks are now top priorities for head coach Doug Pederson, offensive coordinator Frank Reich and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland before next Sunday's home opener against the NFC East rival Giants.

Andy Reid specializes in a couple of things: He always beats his former assistants who go on to head coaching jobs; and he always wins when he gets extra time to prepare. It is so imperative that you tackle to the ground or else extra yards could really come back and bite a team and Hunt is the flawless example of it.

Hunt used the ball as a pillow and pretended to nap in the end zone after his second touchdown.

"I thought we had a great game plan going in", Ertz said. I know that. Maybe I enjoy it even more, now.

So what went wrong in the second half of a game the Eagles otherwise dominated statistically?

Wentz finished with 333 yards and two touchdowns passing, despite facing relentless pressure all afternoon. While Sproles was fairly effective (10 carries, 48 yards), he can only be leaned on so much.

LeGarrette Blount did not receive a single rushing attempt against the Chiefs. "You're going to have successful plays against your own defense".

It seems like most Kansas City Chiefs fans have already forgotten about the injury to Spencer Ware.

"Stop sleeping on me", Hunt said.

The Eagles lost, so I suppose you can pin that on whatever you like. Much of that damage came in the second half after the Chiefs struggled to move the ball on the ground in the first half. Smith took a series of hits late in the first half, prompting a timeout for trainers to check his condition. After watching the Eagles' offensive line against the Chiefs, it is safe to say that all of these "experts' were grossly incorrect".

Pederson and Reid both said this week that they remain good friends, and that there is a certain level of respect between them.

You've seen them. Be honest.

I wasn't a big believer in this Kansas City wideout corps, but then they all flew wide open all night against New England and I kind of changed my mind.

The Chiefs led 6-3 at halftime, and it was still 13-13 in the fourth quarter when Wentz threw a pass that bounced off Houston and into the arms of Chris Jones. Man I have been so hard on that guy, but he really showed up last week, whether it was that terrific touchdown catch early, that nice one-handed grab that nearly turned into his second touchdown, or being a reliable option on third down, he was terrific.
