Directed by Alexander Payne and starring Damon, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, and Udo Kier, the premise appears to be something akin to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids meets an Inconvenient Truth, with a satirical slant and a soundtrack featuring the Talking Heads.

The trailer starts out with the set up announcement of the invention of a process to shrink people down to less than 1% of their normal size. It gives us a odd, speculative playground in which to grapple with our present-day fears about economic and environmental collapse. Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) elect to have the procedure, and find themselves in the midst of "life-changing adventures". "We have the best houses; the best restaurants".

The trailer showcases the benefits of downsizing, with some clever effects (one bottle of Absolut Vodka can satisfy thousands), but not everything is pleasant in paradise (what's that form Paul has to sign?).

Downsizing has been playing the festival circuit, having screened at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

The sci-fi comedy drama comes from director Alexander Payne, who has been nominated for six Academy Awards, and scored two wins for adapted screenplay.

Downsizing opens this December, just in time to make a play for Best Picture consideration at the Oscars.
