With Chelsea wanting rid of him and Atleti keen to re-sign their former star, it seemed inevitable Costa would return to Madrid during the recent transfer window.

Premier League champions Chelsea have reportedly agreed a mega million deal to sell embattled striker Diego Costa to Spanish club Atletico Madrid.

"The English club has authorised Diego Costa to travel to Madrid in the coming days to undergo medical tests and settle his contract with our club".

But Conte and Chelsea, together with the striker and his agent, Jorge Mendes, agreed Costa could leave that summer. Costa has not played for Chelsea since the FA Cup final in May, following which he claims manager Antonio Conte sent him a text telling him he was not in his plans for the new season.

The Spain global, who turns 29 next month, was told in the summer he had no future at Stamford Bridge.

It will bring an end to a hugely successful Chelsea career for Costa, which saw him plunder 52 goals across three seasons and win two Premier League titles.

The Brazilian-born Spanish worldwide did not return to west London this summer after being told via text message that Antonio Conte no longer had plans for the 28-year-old forward.

Alvaro Morata was signed from Real Madrid in a £60m deal over the summer to replace Costa up top for the Blues.
