They did not say whether the facility had air conditioning when paramedics were called early Wednesday morning. Mr. Sanchez told that the unfortunate deaths might have occurred due to the loss of power in the storm and their officers are also checking other 42 assisted living facilities and nursing home running throughout the city.

"Across Florida and nearby states, some 5mn homes and businesses were without power on Wednesday, down from a peak of 7.8mn on Monday".

At 4 a.m., firefighters were sent back to the facility to transport a patient reportedly experiencing breathing problems, police said.

Trump and his wife Melania will head to the city of Fort Myers, where they will be briefed on hurricane recovery efforts along with Vice President Mike Pence, the White House said.

Hollywood Fire Rescue crews responded to the nursing home for a call at about 3 a.m. Wednesday regarding a patient who was reportedly in cardiac arrest.

Most homes in the Keys have no power and there is practically no cell phone service or internet.

The nursing home has had a list of safety violations and citations, including two for not following generator regulations in 2014 and 2016.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a statement saying he was "absolutely heartbroken" to learn of the deaths of the elderly retirees.

The governor's office said Tuesday "the facility reported to the AHCA [Agency for Health Care Administration] that they had power and access to fans and spot coolers".

Hurricane Irma has claimed five more lives, patients at a Florida nursing home that lost electricity during the storm that brought widespread flooding and power outages over the weekend, authorities said on Wednesday.

On his way back from the hurricane-ravaged Florida on Thursday, Trump assured that Hurricane Irma and Tropical Storm Harvey haven't changed his skepticism about the consequences of climate change.

Most of the deceased were treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat-related issues. She said her sister could not talk or walk.

Police said they have opened a probe into possible criminal negligence.

"When you think of the incredible power of that storm, and while people unfortunately passed, it was such a small number", Trump said.

The deaths are under investigation as criminal homicides.

"If they find that this facility was not meeting the state's high standards of care, they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law", Scott's statement said. But just hours after the first call, responders who had arrived to fully evacuate the nursing home found the situation was far worse than the 911 calls had indicated.

In the battered Florida Keys, meanwhile, county officials pushed back against a preliminary estimate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that 25 percent of all homes in the Keys were destroyed and almost all the rest were heavily damaged. Although the deaths of those will come under Hurricane Irma's devastating effect, still many people believe that the unfortunate incidence could have been avoided.

At least 25 people died when Irma pounded the Southeast earlier this week, including 12 people in Florida.
