A photo showing a glass case full of guns with a sign directly above it reading "Own the school year like a hero" went viral on Reddit before making its way to other social media platforms. Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson later clarified that that was a mistake, and that officials were still trying to figure out where the photo was taken, if the sign was removed - and if it even existed in the first place. 'This was disgusting and we removed the sign as soon as we found out'.

Still, the person in charge of social media for Walmart had a busy day on Wednesday.

Wal-Mart has found itself at the center of outrage after a photo of a gun display with a back to school theme surfaced on the Internet.

On Thursday evening, a Walmart spokesperson told The Times that it was possible the image had been "digitally enhanced" or is some kind of prank.

Leeanna May told the Post she took the photo and that she was in Evansville when she did it.

"It was never confirmed the sign was [at the store in Indiana], and it wasn't confirmed that this was the store in question", Mr. Crowson said.

"We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened".

"We have already lost so many innocent lives to guns", she said, adding that she made the immediate connection between guns and school shootings when she saw the display.

'People don't seem to honestly care, ' May noted.

The retailer also drew fire a year ago before September 11 when a store in Panama City Beach, Florida used Coca-Cola products to build two towers signifying the World Trade Center.
