The iconic VW Microbus will get an electric version in 2022.

Hippies everywhere rejoice, the Volkswagen Microbus concept vehicle that debuted in Detroit at an auto show earlier this year is going into production.

According to Hinrich J. Woebcken, the CEO of Volkswagen's North American Region, the Microbus will have a ideal balance between usability, sustainability, and emotion, but also be a technological showcase.

The passenger version will arrive at the request of fans. The press release stated that the announcement was made in California at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Volkswagen has committed to bringing its Microbus minivan back from the dead - as a heavily stylised, all-electric fashion wagon. In the concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, the drivers seat could rotate 180 degrees and there was a central infotainment/media hub that can slide between the first and second rows. Variability and ample connectivity has also been confirmed, but there are still no details on the powertrain.

"For me, the I.D. Buzz concept is the most attractive and most exciting electric vehicle in the world", Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand said in the statement.

VW is mainly targeting customers in North America, Europe and China with the electric camper van. The high seating position, cargo capacity, overall versatility and all-wheel drive option packaged into such an appealing design is just what our customers want from us.

Volkswagen's original Type 1 Microbus debuted in 1950 and had just 30 horsepower.

"The vehicle looks like a compact commercial van on the outside, even though it offers the generous interior space of a large SUV", said VW. Range, performance, and comparability between other electric vehicles (EVs) could be the deal buster. Volkswagen also stated that their whole line would be electricity-powered starting in 2019.
