"The militants were observed loading weapons in to a vehicle and were under surveillance until the vehicle was destroyed by an airstrike", said Bob Purtiman, United States Forces-Afghanistan spokesman. Saaz Wali Shinwari, the district governor of Haska Mina in Nangarhar province, said the raid was carried out by USA troops although there was no official confirmation from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

"Unfortunately, in the airstrike we have casualties". All the victims, which included women and children, were civilians and they were from one family.

The district chief, Saaz Wali, told VOA eight of the victims belonged to the same family and were in a vehicle when a US airstrike hit them.

The latest victims died Thursday afternoon when the vehicles they were traveling in were hit by USA airstrikes believed to be targeting Islamic State militants in the area, Wali said.

The armed conflict in Afghanistan has killed more than 1,700 civilians and wounded many more since the beginning of 2017, according to United Nations documentation of civilian casualties.

Civilian casualties caused by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces have been one of the most contentious issues in the close to 16-year military campaign in Afghanistan, prompting strong government and public criticism.

"Two mortar mines fired by militants struck some houses in Tort Atai village in Dawlatabad district Friday night, killing 13 innocent civilians and injuring three others", the official told Xinhua. "But, we have appointed a delegation to investigate if civilians are killed".

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, confirmed that casualties had occurred in the area but said that officials would release details later.

Last month a USA airstrike killed 16 policemen in Helmand province.

Every so often، U.S. air raids kill both Afghan soldiers and civilians across the country.

The United States military reacted at the allegations regarding the civilian casualties during an airstrike in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.
