The island has been the focus of North Korean threats in the past, as the home base for nuclear-equipped bombers that have the capacity to strike the reclusive nation.

A new stamp issued in commemoration of the successful test launch of the "Hwasong-14" intercontinental ballistic missile is seen in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang. Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam house an estimated 13,000 military members and their dependents. While there has been some resistance and displeasure from the people of Guam over the USA military's presence, it is also essential to the island's economy, second only to tourism in importance.

A senior presidential official has downplayed the growing military tension between the US and North Korea. Seoul is 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) to the northwest, Tokyo is 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) north and Taipei is 1,700 miles (2,700 kilometers) west. Its proximity to China, Japan, the Philippines and the Korean Peninsula has long made the island an essential possession of the USA military.

"We are getting ready to increase our military presence there, we are moving some forces off Okinawa into Guam", Coffman added.

Andersen Air Force Base hosts a Navy helicopter squadron and Air Force bombers that rotate to Guam from the USA mainland. Residents do not pay US income taxes or vote in the general election for USA president.

Guam's total population is 160,000. It has two 2-mile (3-kilometer) -long runways and large fuel and munitions storage facilities.

Because Guam is a USA territory, the US military may launch forces from there without worrying about upsetting a host nation that may object to US actions.

During the Vietnam War, the Air Force sent 155 B-52 bombers to Andersen to hit targets in Southeast Asia.

"But Guam is a little bit different, and on the USA side, Guam or other U.S. bases in the Pacific-Asia region may be lost but the United States itself is safe". It's created to destroy ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight.
