"Combined with the power and influence of Twitter, the hashtag empowers everyone to see what's happening in the world and what people are talking about".

The hashtag came about almost a year and a half after co-founder and current CEO Jack Dorsey's first tweet, in March 2006.

The hashtag turns 10 today, and inventor Chris Messina - aka user no 1186 on Twitter - has explained how a small group of early Twitter users wanted to make conversations easier to follow. If a hashtag's trending on Twitter, you know it's turning into water cooler fodder.

Former Google and Uber engineer Chris Messina first used the symbol as a way of tagging or categorising a tweet on August 23 2007, when he suggested the symbol could be used to create group messages. "It was an undeniably elegant proposal", he said. "Since it first appeared on Twitter, the hashtag has dramatically evolved - from grouping Tweets, to adding quirky commentary, to sparking social movements and global conversations". Today, an average of 125 million hashtags are shared globally every day on the platform. Hashtag use has grown considerably.

According to Twitter, the most used hashtag in 2007 - #noticias, the Spanish word for news - was tweeted around 9,000 times.

To celebrate the #'s birthday, Twitter has created a special hashtag (#Hashtag10) and released some stats about the phenomenon.

#FollowFriday: Since its birth in January 2009, #FF or #followfriday has been used over half a billion times. In contrast, the biggest of 2017 has already been used more than 300 million times, the social media site said.

#OOTD has been reportedly used over 120 million times in the past decade along with #ThrowbackThursday and #TBT.

Many of those are used in a sporting context as people interact with each other over live games, competitions, transfers and other major news stories in real time.

"Some of the biggest hashtags used to vote for artists include: #BTSBBMAs, #EMABiggestFansJustinBieber, #EMABiggestFans1D, #vote5sos and #PushAwardsKathNiels", they continued.
