At the time, Urban was still relatively unknown in the world of country music.

His performance of the title song from the 1969 film "True Grit", in which he played a Texas Ranger alongside Oscar victor John Wayne, received an Academy Award nomination.

On Tuesday, Glen Campbell's family shared the sad news that he had died after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.

Campbell died on Tuesday in a Nashville care facility after battling Alzheimer's since 2011.

"I was talking to him, going, 'Remember me?"

The singer-songwriter performed a surprise cover of the late legend's Gentle on My Mind for fans at the Bridgestone Arena, including young country star Kelsea Ballerini.

For those of us who were youngsters in the late 1960s and 70s, Glen Campbell's songs were ubiquitous and crossed generations. Tim McGraw Tweeted: "Songs, songs, songs".

Campbell hosted his own television show - The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour - from 1969 to 1972 and took his chiselled good looks to Hollywood. "I'm a jazzer. I just love to get the guitar and play the hell out of it if I can". Kenny Rogers said:✔"So very sorry to hear this". I thought he was great in it, funny, courageous, a guy who could hold his own against John Wayne's formidable Roster Cogburn. Lee Greenwood said: "There has never been an artiste who had more talent".

In 2014, Entertainment Tonight showed Tucker a trailer for the farewell tour film, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me and she became emotional over what could have been. "This led me down the path me to where I am today".

"Maybe Glen and Merle (Haggard) are picking a tune together right now". He put voice to songs like "Wichita Lineman", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Highwayman (years before the country supergroup featuring Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings-yes, that Highwayman)".

Glen, of Scots ancestry and profient at playing the bagpipes, was a superb artiste whose rich, engaging musical legacy lives on.
