Soldier martyred in Pakistan firing along LoC in Poonch

A soldier and a woman were killed in Pakistani troops firing and mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sector of border district of Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

Ruqia (40), a resident of Dharana, was killed on the spot after a mortar shell fired by Pakistani rangers from across the border exploded inside her house, officials said. "The Indian positions are effectively retaliating".

In the exchange of fire, Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was grievously injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

This year, Pakistani forces have carried out 301 incidents of unprovoked ceasefire violations along the LoC, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. Shabir at Gohlad Kalran village, killing his wife Raqia Bi, a police officer said.

The attack which took place yesterday, injured a soldier who was later shifted to the military hospital Drugmulla for treatment. In 2016, the number was significantly less at 228.

A lady was killed when Pakistan damaged truce in Jammu and Kashmir's Mendhar part at 5:30 am on Saturday. Thirteen schools in vulnerable areas would remain closed till further orders, officials said.
