Other passengers have said smoke was filling the underground station as it was evacuated with pictures taken aboard a train showing passengers covering their mouths with clothing.

A Tube carriage caught fire - causing a mass evacuation which witnesses described as "terrifying".

The official Bakerloo Line feed tweeted: "Smoke on a train has been reported, its being investigated".

Commuters have been pictured shielding their faces from thick smoke which billowed through their carriage.

Commuter Katie Watts posted to Twitter: 'Just got off the tube at Oxford Circus and the train across the platform was on fire, got evacuated out'.

Tom Richell was about to enter the station as alarms were sounded. "Just get back". She looked scared.

The Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines have been suspended. Some people were running up the escalator but they had shut certain exits, although it was very orderly.

The London Fire Brigade and British Transport Police are at the scene. "We are investigating reports of a fire", a spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade said according to Reuters.
