Overwatch to Finally Introduce Deathmatch Game Mode

One of Overwatch's most requested modes is finally making its way into the game.

Now live on the PTR. Deathmatch will roll out to the Overwatch Arcade on the PTR today and come with two modes and a new map.

Although Overwatch has arguably been one of the most popular shooters since its release in 2016 - it managed to become Blizzard's fastest growing franchise, for instance - the title has yet to officially receive the granddaddy of all FPS modes: Deathmatch.

The Deathmatch game mode will have its own scoreboard and two varieties players can choose to play.

The modes work exactly how you'd expect: players attempt to kill as many enemies as possible, and each kill counts as a point. Kaplan, however, said the Arcade mode - which is all about changing up the Overwatch formula in fun ways - is a flawless course of action to introduce something like deathmatch.

If you're in the top four in each match, you'll get win credit toward your loot boxes. Some of the Hybrid, Assault and Escort Overwatch maps have been modified for the purposes of Deathmatch, and there'll be a new purpose-made map for free-for-all too. Mechanically it'll have jump pads and tight corridors, while narratively you'll get hints about Widowmaker's background. The map is home to Widowmaker, following her civilian life and lore of the character and her family estate in France.

Customization options will be available in both Team Deathmatch and FFA. Both of the new modes are joining the Public Test Realm later today, August 10, and will be almost identical to the Deathmatch modes you may have experienced in other first-person shooters.

It seems likely that this new build will take a while to test and will likely launch sometime after the end of the Overwatch Summer Games.
