Mariners Log: M's fall to Angels on Segura's ninth-inning error

The Angels (59-58) moved into a tie with Seattle (59-58) in the American League West Division, each trailing Houston by 13 games.

Moore, 23, was available for the second game of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field.

The Mariners also had the bases loaded with two outs in the third inning, but Jarrod Dyson struck out.

The Mariners went down quietly against Yusmeiro Petit in the bottom of the ninth inning. Erasmo Ramirez gave up just an unearned run on three hits over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. The veteran right-hander will carry an unpalatable 5.09 ERA and 1.44 WHIP into a road showdown with the Mariners next time he takes to the mound. Cruz homered on a 3-0 pitch in the second and Zunino's shot in the fifth was the 30th home run allowed this season by Nolasco, the most in the American League. He fielded the ball and scooped it to Ramirez running to cover first.

Amplifying Moore's struggles, Seattle failed to start getting a reliever ready in the bullpen until after Pujols' hit. Paxton was optimistic it was a minor injury, but an MRI on Friday morning confirmed a stint on the disabled list and another blow for the Mariners' postseason chances. Paxton is 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 20 starts. To make room on the roster for Bailey, OF Cesar Puello was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

On the pitching end of things, James Paxton has taken the place of Felix Hernandez as the de-facto "ace" of the pitching rotation, and though the pitchers behind him are shaky at best, the Mariners bullpen seems to have transformed into a strength of the team.

JC Ramirez lost his last outing as Baltimore reached him for six runs and eight hits in seven innings. Angels RHP Parker Bridwell (6-1, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to face Mariners LHP Ariel Miranda (7-5, 4.65) on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series.
