Manchester City are considering matching Lionel Messi's release clause, according to a report of Canal Plus in France.

Messi is yet to put pen to paper on a proposed new deal at the Camp Nou, a fact that has stirred speculation. The team are reeling from the departure of Brazilian Neymar and no signings have been made to shore up attack and midfield properly.

The Mirror said Manchester City's interest is long-standing and they are understood to be prepared to use his £275m release clause to sign him if the possibility presents itself.

Monday's football gossip claims Barcelona striker could be reunited with his former manager.

He was supposed to sign the deal upon arriving at Barcelona but that has not happened.

Messi's Barcelona contract expires after this season, and he'd be able to leave as soccer's most sought-after free agent in July 2018.

It has been said that Messi wants Barcelona to fill the gap left by Neymar with some high-profile players before committing his future to the club.

However, one thing must be considered - Neymar was eager for the move.

Other outlets believe City officials have already met Messi's people and are assured the Argentinian superstar is open to a move.

Barcelona announced last month Messi had agreed to a lucrative four-year contract extension, but FC Barcelona's sports vice president, Jordi Mestre admitted last week in a press conference Messi still hasn't signed the deal.
