Middlesbrough have beaten a host of clubs such as Reading, Birmingham City and Aston Villa to sign Baker.

It is revealed on the club's website that Baker will spend the 2017/18 campaign on loan at the Riverside.

Baker started out his career with Luton before joining Chelsea in 2005.

Despite their season opener defeat to Wolves, Middlesbrough will look to perform impressively this term and return back to the Premier League as soon as possible.

Baker featured for England Under-21s at this summer's European Championships and was also part of the Blues squad which travelled to China and Singapore for pre-season and gained minutes in matches against Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

"This opportunity arose and I thought it would be a great one for me".

"I see this as a great opportunity for me to come here and show what I can do".

He had loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons, but has spent the last two seasons playing in the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem.

"I already know what the Championship is about".

Boro had been keen to keep Marten de Roon, who played in the opening game of the season, but they will have to do without the central midfielder this season.

The Championship is arguably the most competitive football league on the planet, and there is no better place for Baker to prepare for life in the Premier League.
