Non-union or "at will" employees, such as most tech workers, can be fired in the United States for a wide array of reasons that have nothing to do with performance.

The manager said that dealing with frequent sexism in the workplace and helping other women navigate the discrimination they were facing took a toll on her and contributed to her decision to quit. However, some of these women are claiming that they only get paid two thirds of a man's wage.

Google has drawn severe criticism over firing James Damore as several anti-Google Ads have popped-up in public places across the streets of Venice.

There were a number of defining moments throughout this tense week at Google. In a recent Blind survey, majority of the employees from these firms voted against Google's decision to fire Damore.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai told employees in a note on Monday that portions of the anti-diversity memo "violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace". On the profile image, he sports a T-shirt with the word "Goolag" spelled out mimicking the Google logo. Volunteers are planning a march on the company offices in nine cities on August 19, according to the March on Google website.

Alphabet's Google canceled on Thursday a company-wide meeting scheduled to discuss the controversy over a memo opposing diversity policies, the company said, citing concerns about personal attacks on employees from far-right commentators.

Pichai has cut short his vacation and along with his leadership team, he will be addressing Googlers on Thursday in a town hall meeting.

Damore, who has emerged as a hero of conservative media, stands by his memo, saying he considered it a "reasoned, well-researched, good-faith argument". Damore said he shared the missive, titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber", about a month ago with specific individuals and groups focused on diversity before posting it to a mailing list called "skeptics" on August 2. Fired4Truth, widely believed to be Damore's Twitter account, is closing in on 50,000 followers in a matter of days. Other men working in tech, it seemed, felt the same way he did. It also faces an ongoing investigation from the Department of Labor over how it pays women. Google and Outfront didn't immediately return requests for more information.

Inside Google, the memo and its fallout represent perhaps the biggest setback to what has been a foundational premise for employees: the freedom to speak up about anything and everything.

Another echoed Damore's criticisms: "I am a moderately conservative Googler, and I am and have been scared to share my beliefs".

"We are going to raise awareness about Google's one-sided bias and campaign against dissenting opinions and voices", activist and protest march organizer Jack Posobiec, a self-identified member of the "new right" that seeks to distance itself from the white-power politics of the alt-right, told this news organization via Twitter.
