Australian Nick Kyrgios fell 6-4 6-3 to fourth seed Alexander Zverev as the German finally claimed victory over his opponent in their third meeting of the season.

The 18-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont. fought off more break points, came back from more deficits and found a way to beat 29-year-old Adrian Mannarino of France in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Friday night.

"It pays off playing aggressively here in Montreal, plus I feel comfortable at net, so why not spend some time there instead of slugging it out from the baseline", Federer said. Zverev defeated Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-5, 6-4.

The second-seeded Federer continued his mastery over 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Federer will next face Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who defeated Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 earlier in the day.

Prior to this, the pair had met only once during a Davis Cup World Group play-off in 2012, when Federer clinched a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win.

"I wasn't the player I was before my injury", Haase said. "Sometimes he tends to just roll the ball in and use the big serve, or he uses a slice a lot and comes in. I got some decent rhythm going".

But he broke Bautista-Agut's serve in the ensuing game and never looked back. I started to believe more and more again.

He is the youngest player ever to reach the semifinals of a Masters Series tournament, one level below the Grand Slams.

Federer grabbed a second service break late in the third set to effectively seal the victory and improve to 17-0 lifetime against the 35-year-old Spaniard.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially against Dimitrov", said Haase.
