The fourth-seeded Zverev, seeking a second tournament title in as many weeks, advanced to the final on Sunday against second-seeded Roger Federer, a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victor over unseeded Robin Haase of the Netherlands. The clay king is looking to reclaim his No. 1 ranking in ATP by winning this year's Roger Cup.

And the decider was one-way traffic for Federer, who saw out the win with a textbook serve and volley to set up a last-eight meeting with Roberto Bautista-Agut.

And Shapovalov nearly struck in the seventh game, but he wasted three break points at 0-40. Only Rafael Nadal (47) has more wins than the 20-year-old this season, and with his win tonight Zverev became the youngest Coupe Rogers finalist since 2007, when Novak Djokovic won the title.

The second seed this week, Federer was typically dominant on serve for much of the match and never really looked likely to fall victim to an upset against an opponent playing a Masters 1000 semi-final for the first time.

Federer reached his sixth final of the year, and will be seeking a sixth win.

Hopes of a revival were, however, short-lived, with Federer upping his levels to break again as he combined his fluid movement with some pinpoint shots to confound his rival.

Federer won the Rogers Cup in 2004 and 2006 when it was held in Toronto.

Ferrer had also come through two tough matches at this event, beating Britain's Kyle Edmund and world number 17 Jack Sock, and he applied immediate pressure on Federer from the off. "A bit surprising, to be quite honest, because I hadn't practiced much". This will be the first match on hard court. "I think it really shows how I've improved mentally, along with just finding my game at the right moments". "Both things combined, two major factors in a beginning of a match, I was able to get into the match better". I was like, Obviously one N. Then the commentator started calling Denis (not pronouncing the S).

EPA/WARREN TODARoger Federer of Switzerland in action against Robin Haase of the Netherlands during the ATP Rogers cup men's semi final in Montreal, Canada, 12 August 2017. "I'm just playing better".

"In the juniors, yeah (and) probably my two times when I beat (Marco) Chiudinelli, because we grew up together in Basel, we played soccer against each other", Federer said.

Through this victory, which was peppered with nine aces, the 36-year-old legend has extended his match-winning streak to 16, which is his longest win streak in five years. I gave away a lot of breaks with double faults.
