Deep divisions in White House over North Korea

Ellison, the Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, initially made the comment at a panel during the left-wing activist gathering Netroots Nation in Atlanta, Georgia.

A White House statement said Trump and President Emmanuel Macron had discussed "the increasingly unsafe situation associated with North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour". "It's tailor-made for somebody to misuse". I mean, his rhetoric might make Kim Jong-un think that he needs to strike first.

Earlier this week, nuclear-armed North Korea threatened to strike the United States and its Pacific territory of Guam.

"You have this guy making bellicose threats against somebody else who has very little to lose over there", Ellison said, according to the Post. "What we need is someone bringing calm to the situation, not spiking it".

A spokesman for the Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army, or KPA, told North Korea's state-run media the KPA is "carefully examining the operational plan for making an enveloping fire at the areas around Guam with medium-to-long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 in order to contain the USA major military bases on Guam".

Over the decades, several key moments convinced Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un a nuclear North Korea was their best chance to survive. "President Trump stated that the United States is ready, along with its allies, to apply the full range of diplomatic, economic, and military measures to achieve that goal", said a readout of the phone call.
