Coutinho asks to leave Liverpool as Barcelona circle

Both clubs are fringe title challengers and former England midfielder Jenas believes that without players who act as the heartbeat of their teams, they will fade from contention.

Having swiftly turned down two bids from the Catalan club for the Brazil global - the last of which totalled €100 million - Fenway Sports Group have supported Jurgen Klopp's repeated insistence that the 25-year-old is not for sale this summer at any cost. "You can read it and there is nothing else to say about it".

Keeping Philippe Coutinho in the face of intense interest from Barcelona would be another significant statement of intent.

Liverpool owners FSG - who consist of John W Henry, the Principal Owner, Chairman Tom Werner and Sports President Mike Gordon - also released a statement that Coutinho is not for sale this window. Liverpool initially insisted that was not the case, but it is understood the player did send an email.

Philippe Coutinho feels aggrieved over his treatment by Jurgen Klopp, according to Sky sources, having handed in a transfer request.

"The board want him to stay, this is not a situation where Liverpool need money or to cash in", Liverpool great Steven Gerrard, the club under-18 coach, said this week about the Coutinho situation. He has not had months to prepare for it as he suggested when asked about clubs getting their way over deals at yesterday's press conference. That's how life is. Phil is not available for us, that's the bigger issue for me. I am already here to work with this squad and not just always thinking 'but if we don't get this or this.' Let's wait until August 31.

The Merseyside outfit begin their Premier League campaign by taking on Watford away on Saturday, then travel to Germany for Tuesday's Champions League qualifying play-off first leg against Hoffenheim.

Klopp's side eventually ended up in fourth place in the Premier League table as they secured Champions League qualification for next season.
