Sam Vokes scored twice as Burnley torpedoed defending champions Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in one of the most sensational opening-weekend results in English top-flight history.

Chelsea's hopes looked to have gone when a late challenge from Cesc Fabregas on Jack Cork added a second yellow to his first, received for dissent, to leave the Blues with nine men.

Conte said: "Morata is very important and it's important that he now adapts himself to our philosophy - today he played a good game with the right intensity".

He said: "I knew Conte loved me and I had talked to him many times".

"We tried until the end to reach a good result against Burnley".

Captain Gary Cahill was shown a straight red card for a studs-first lunge in the 13th minute, then the champions conceded three goals in a 20-minute period before halftime.

Instead, his studs caught the Belgium midfielder on the shin and while it was accidental, it was also reckless and referee Craig Pawson immediately brandished the red card.

"But our first half, we kept losing our heads".

Conte has struggled to hide his frustrations over Chelsea's failure to strengthen their squad, with Morata, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero their only new signings. I'm not anxious because we have to trust in our work and today there were three injured players, Pedro, Hazard, Bakayoko, and one player missing for a ban, [Victor] Moses.

Morata, who joined from Real Madrid for a reported initial fee of £58million, had only made two International Champions Cup appearances for Chelsea prior to last Sunday's encounter following a lengthy transfer saga. And it's something that motivates me and makes me work harder every day.

Everton - Ronald Koeman has done a fantastic job and the signing of Wayne Rooney is magical for the player and the club.

Chelsea must now take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday without Cahill and Fabregas as well as Eden Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko, who remain several weeks away from full fitness.
