Wisconsin linebacker Jack Cichy is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL.

"You hate it for Jack", head coach Paul Chryst said in a press release via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He's one of the leaders of our team and I know he'll be a big part of what we do moving forward this season". The senior will undergo surgery on Friday.

Wisconsin kicks off the 2017 season at home on September 1 against Utah St. In his seven starts, Cichy recorded 60 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. It's unclear at this point whether Cichy would be granted another year of eligibility at Wisconsin, but this year, the Badgers will be without their top linebacker.

Cichy, a senior, has dealt with other injuries in his career, missing seven games last season after tearing a pectoral muscle. "From walk-on to captain it's been an unreal experience".

At inside linebacker, T.J. Edwards is still back as a junior starter and fellow junior Ryan Connelly will likely take Cichy's place.

He played in only one game and logged one tackle during his freshman campaign at Wisconsin in 2013 and then proceeded to redshirt for the 2014 season. He was named to the watch list for the 2017 Bednarik Award, which is given out to the best defensive player in the nation.
