Army Men Killed, 3 Injured In Jammu And Kashmir's Shopian Encounter

The encounter is believed to be going on in the Bagdad area of Awneera village and both the terrorists and security forces are engaged in a heavy exchange of fire; cordon-and-search operations have begun, said an India Today report.

At least two police personnel were injured after terrorists attacked a police search party in Bandipora district of Jammu & Kashmir early morning on Sunday. The Army also confirmed that they had recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition and also ration, medicines with Pakistani markings.

Meanwhile, different reports suggest presence of 10 to 13 militants even though the number could not be officially confirmed.

Both the injured have been hospitalised, he said.

A senior police official said that a soldier was killed in the ongoing gunfight.

Police said more security personnel - including the police, the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force - had been rushed to the area and three more villages were brought under the extended cordon.

Seven civilians had sustained pellet injuries during clashes.

On Saturday evening, Kashmir's inspector general of police, Muneer Khan told a local newspaper that several militants were surrounded by forces in Shopian, but another bunch was shooting at the security team from an open area outside the cordon.
