The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday chose to support Opposition's Presidential candidate Meira Kumar.

Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Raj Babbar and senior party leader Pramod Tiwari, she drove to the BSP state headquarters here to meet Mayawati. "During its first tenure Mr Kejriwal formed the Government in coalition with the Congress party and now it has made a decision to support Meira Kumar who is Congress nominee for the post of President election", Mr Sirsa said in a statement.

Kumar has also telephoned Kejriwal seeking AAP's support and this was discussed in the PAC, he said adding. "However, this time also elections are happening and we have take a decision to support Kumar", senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh told reporters.

Sources from the party were already voicing the AAP's support for Ms. Kumar because pitching an Independent candidate would not have made sense.

It may be recalled that Meira Kumar had earlier cancelled her trip to Odisha following intense bickering among several Congress MLAs and the PCC leadership.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah July 13 met two senior RSS leaders, Bhaiyyaji Joshi and Krishna Gopal, to discuss the ruling National Democratic Alliance's candidate for the August 5 vice presidential election. "But in the present circumstances, we prefer a strong and united Opposition", Mr. Singh said.

Meira Kumar was slated to later meet Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav. Ram Nath Kovind has been fielded by the ruling BJP and its allies.

Ms. Kumar had filed her nomination in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a number of Opposition leaders on June 28.
