Accepting the nomination, Gopal Gandhi said "I accept the nomination and applaud the unity and conviction with which the opposition parties have asked me to be their candidate for the vice-presidentship".

Raut also hit out at Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her remark on the President, saying that the presidential poll is a fight against "narrow-minded communal vision".

All elected MPs and member of legislative assemblies are eligible to vote and elect the successor of Pranab Mukherjee, who demits office on July 25. However, just like the case Ram Nath Kovind, party's pick for the presidential post, there is hardly any clue as to who can be party candidate for the top post.

"In this meeting, we held discussions on Presidential elections and the upcoming monsoon session, however, no discussion on Vice President took place", Kumar said. The elections for the Vice President is scheduled to be held on August 5.

The Congress leader said, in these contests, the numbers may be against them but "the battle must be fought and fought hard".

According to the text of her speech, she said, "We must stand more aware than ever of who we are, what we fought for in our independence struggle and what future we want for ourselves".

She said, "This election represents a clash of ideas, a conflict of disparate values".

The party is learnt to have felt that Venkaiah was the most suitable candidate for the post as he had huge experience of handling the Rajya Sabha affairs as its member and also parliamentary affairs minister.

The interactive session, the sources say, will see Ms Kumar, the opposition's presidential nominee, and Gandhi, its vice presidential candidate, make their presentations before them. "We must have confidence in the values we believe in". He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.

Tuesday is the last date for filing of nominations.
