A relative of hers announced the sad news yesterday on social media.

The star's niece Gina Mear took to Facebook to break the sad news that Carol had "lost her fearless fight against cancer".

Sharing a picture of her with her family, she wrote: "My dear aunty Carl passed away yesterday, RIP Grotbags, I will miss you".

Fans have flocked to Twitter to share their condolences and fond memories of Carol, with many saying she made their childhood.

When that show was axed, she was given her own show in 1991, which revolved around Grotbags and her minions at Gloomy Fortress.

Gina also posted some nostalgic photos of her aunt on her Twitter page.

Scott started her career as a club cabaret performer, pub singer and Pontins Blue Coat.

Rest in Peace Carol AKA Grotbags, you'll be dearly missed! She released two albums in the 70s called "In Time" and "Your Place Is Here with Me".

The character of Grotbags was first created when Scott spent a summer season performing alongside Hull in Cleethorpes, before evolving into the green TV character that children loved to hate.

Plus, a memorial message has been posted on her official website.

Carol Lee Scott has sadly died. A larger than life lady with a much larger heart of comedy, kindness and generosity!' It reads.
