Disney's Sean Bailey announced during the studio's Live-Action Film panel that Mena Massoud will play Aladdin, Power Rangers' Naomi Scott will play Jasmine, and Will Smith will portray the Genie. He recently landed his first major role in Amazon's forthcoming Jack Ryan TV series.

The House of Mouse may have been having problems finding its titular Aladdin for the remake of the 1992 animated classic prior to D23 this weekend, but the same can not be said for Jasmine and Genie.

They also revealed that the live action version of Agrabah will be a "vibrant cosmopolitan city" drawing inspiration from the Middle East, India and parts of China.

Names including Massoud's, Achraf Koutet and George Kosturos were among those circulating the internet for weeks prior to Disney's announcement. Will Smith had been previously announced as the Genie. For its upcoming adaption of Aladdin, Guy Ritchie has been hired to tell the story of the street rat thief turned Arabian prince.

"Lion" actor Dev Patel and "Star Wars" star Riz Ahmed were both rumored to be in contention for the role in Ritchie's reimagining of the 1992 Disney animated classic. Born in Egypt and raised in Ontario, Massoud is a relatively unknown actor with a thin resume.
