"The two titles will be the first mainstream and fully-established Western MMORPGs to deliver the complete MMO experience to PC and mobile platforms and feature full interoperable play, allowing players to jump from PC to mobile platforms and back again", says Jagex.

Both versions of RuneScape will offer crossplay, making it possible for to access the same character on both PC and mobile.

"As a MMO player, you ideally want to play at any time of the day or night no matter where you are", said Jagex senior product director, Neil McClarty We know that our players' time is precious, and that's why want to give all RuneScape players, both present and past, the opportunity to play RuneScape on the go.

Old School RuneScape will launch this Winter while RuneScape will come after, although no date has been given. Players can use their existing accounts and play in the same servers that they use in the PC versions of the games. RuneScape debuted as a browser-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game in 2001. You can see some screenshots from the mobile versions below; the first four images are from Old-School RuneScape, while the last is from RuneScape.

"The first logical approach is to take the title to mobile because our players have grown up". Old School RuneScape will be released something this winter, while RuneScape will be released in 2018. Alternatively players who prefer a mobile experience can dedicate their time on the mobile app too.

RuneScape's 16-year existence is a sign of why games-as-a-service are so desirable by companies right now. There is also a potential new audience that might have never played RuneScape before, much less even heard of it, and these mobile clients will be the entry point to a real, full-fledged MMORPG on mobile.
