Announcing the LinkedIn app for Windows 10

LinkedIn's new app for Windows 10 is available for users in the U.S. on Monday and its global users by the end of July.

The blog posts on the Windows Experience and LinkedIn blog highlight that Windows 10 users will "enjoy a richer, more engaging and connected LinkedIn experience". Microsoft will be dropping the Windows Phone version of the LinkedIn app and is advising those affected to use its mobile Web site, instead.

LinkedIn launches its new Windows 10 desktop app, combining two Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) properties.

Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 10. There's also a Live Tile feature so messages and updates can pop up on members' screens, said Hermes Alvarez, a product manager.

While anyone with an incompatible PC can simply hold off trying to install the Creators Update for a while, as Bott points out, Windows 10 has an month support lifecycle, so there's only 9 months left until the Anniversary Update stops being eligible for security and reliability fixes.

LinkedIn does support notifications in browsers already as well however, but I don't know if those are in real-time or delayed.

I can not imagine that a lot of users make use of these features on the desktop, except maybe for a quick glance on the weather tile every now and then.

The release of the first Insider builds is significant because in September the features on offer will coagulate into Microsoft's first-ever release in Windows Server's "Semi-annual Channel". The situation improves with every release, but if Microsoft cannot deliver powerful applications that show the strength of the Universal Windows Platform, how can the company expect that third-party developers invest resources in doing so?

On the other hand, it is expected that most people would refer to the update as to Windows 10 version 1709, and Microsoft now itself uses the version number in its official documentation. You'd still have to open the website to take action, consuming time and diverting your attention.
