Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde says Andre Gomes will remain at the club beyond this summer.

"A player who can play in all three positions would be incredible, because playing in that position means you're always fighting for game time so the more positions you can play in, the more opportunities you'll have".

New Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde admitted he was relieved at not having to face Lionel Messi anymore in his first press conference of the club's pre-season.

Barca president, Josep Maria Bartomeu has already confirmed the club's interest in landing Italy global, Verratti, even stating that the player himself wants to move to Camp Nou. I've not marked any dates [for signings to be in place].

Valverde was asked if he would be playing Messi in a more withdrawn role this season and added: "Messi will go on dictating the way we play".

"For me, they're not for sale".

"It's hard because we have an wonderful team".

"I have nearly the best squad possible anyway".

Sporting director, Fernandez also confirmed Barca will be pursuing transfers up until the very last minute. "If an option comes up which we like - the ideal would be a player who can play in all three midfield positions - we will be on top of it, but it's hard with players who have contracts [with other clubs] and who play for good teams".

It's suggested Barca chiefs have been open to Messi's request and have assured him Rakitic will not be sold.

However, a report in Sport on Monday claimed the forward is unsettled in Catalonia and would consider leaving in the transfer window.

The Spanish giants have been heavily linked with the Italian midfielder in the past few months, but things turned a bit sour over the last week when the player's agent came out and criticised PSG for not allowing his client to speak with the La Liga giants.
