"He is grateful for the courageous actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues, ' they explained".

U.S. House Republican Whip Steve Scalise was in critical condition following surgery after being shot Wednesday morning by a gunman at a congressional baseball practice field in Virginia, hospital officials said.

Four others were also shot, including the suspected gunman, James Hodgkinson of IL, who died of his wounds.

Griner and Bailey were at the park as part of Scalise's security detail, which is assigned to protect the House's No. 3 Republican at all times. Scalise underwent surgery and is said to be stable, according to President Donald Trump. The hospital tweeted late Wednesday that the congressman will require additional operations.

The congressman remained in critical condition as hospital officials released a more detailed description of his wounds. "Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", Mr Trump said. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center.

"Everyone on that field is a public servant - our courageous police, our congressional aides who work so tirelessly behind the scenes with enormous devotion, and our dedicated members of Congress who represent our people", Trump said. Also, law enforcement is investigating the shooting as a criminal act and not terrorism.

In remarks made from the White House shortly before noon, U.S. President Donald Trump said the gunman died from injuries after the shooting.

Trump described Scalise as a "very good friend", a "patriot" and a "fighter".

The hospital also said another victim of the shooting is in good condition but it did not identify them. The Capitol Police Memorial Fund has been added to the list of this year's beneficiaries.

"We are united. We are united in our shock. We are all horrified by this terrible attack on our friends and on our colleagues and those who serve and protect this capital".

Witnesses reported that James Hodgkinson, identified by authorities as the man who carried out the attack on congressmen as they practiced for an upcoming charity baseball game, was firing a rifle when the attack began.
