United Nations stands firm on climate change despite USA plans to withdraw

The Paris agreement gives undue advantage to India and China, "the world's leading polluters", at the cost of US interests, Mr. Trump said, unravelling a critical area of mutual interest and cooperation between New Delhi and Washington in recent years.

"That's the message mayors, governors, and business leaders all across the U.S. have been sending".

It even drew criticism from some Republicans, as small demonstrations erupted in NY and Washington.

"The Paris climate accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries", Trump said.

The Russian president joked that people can now blame the ill effects of global warming on Trump and America.

Colorado's Democrat Governor John Hickenlooper inadvertently gave additional credibility to one of President Trump's main reasons for withdrawing from the global agreement: Trump said we do not need 190 other nations and meaningless targets for the year 2100 to tell us when to pursue our own clean air policies.

"Pittsburgh and other cities know that fighting climate change will not only save our planet, but save lives", Peduto said in a statement.

The Democratic-led states of California, New York and Washington pledged separately after Trump's announcement to uphold the global accord's goals to reduce emissions and implement new programs on cleaner energy use.

Eighty-seven United States mayors, who say they represent 40 million Americans, have also committed to uphold the Paris commitments, intensify efforts to meet climate goals and increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. "Therefore, we are organizing a group to demonstrate our support for President Trump and his fearless leadership". "We're supposed to get rid of ours", the President said, adding that the agreement "is less about the climate and more about other countries gaining a financial advantage over the U.S".

The Democratic governors of Rhode Island and CT also announced Friday that they would join the state climate alliance.

Although Yale already has its own carbon reduction plan, the University has reached out to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg - who is leading an effort to commit cities, states and corporations to fulfilling the United States' obligations under the Paris accord - to ask about his climate pact.

"If the U.S. drops out of the climate agreement... for European trade policy, this means that American production sites don't need to abide by the climate goals", Germany's center-left chancellor candidate said on Thursday, speaking at the WDR Europa Forum in Berlin. They are hoping more governors will join them.

At a long-planned meeting on Friday between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and European Union officials in Brussels, the leaders pledged full implementation of the Paris deal.

At his White House withdrawal announcement, Trump complained that the global agreement, signed by 197 countries during the previous Obama administration, was "unfair" to American workers that imposed "draconian" restrictions on the United States sovereignty and domestic economic activities.
