WILLIAM BRANGHAM: The president publicly broke his silence about James Comey's testimony today in a Rose Garden news conference with Klaus Iohannis, the president of Romania.

He asserted that nothing in Mr Comey's testimony to the Senate pointed to collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice.

No the president, who I want to point out is a colossal dumbass liar that will say anything because he doesn't give a shit about anyone, responded that the public will be disappointed with his answer and we all know why: He's a fucking liar and a terrible person! and, there is no there, there!

"No collusion. No obstruction". He said he leaked some of those notes last month, hoping to prompt the naming of a special counsel.

Burr noted that a day before the public hearing with Comey (which was followed by a closed door session), the committee met with Director of National Intelligence Daniel R. Coats, Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, National Security Agency Director Admiral Michael Rogers and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in open session.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: He did tell President Trump several times that he wasn't specifically under investigation.

Trump also claimed during his first news conference in 22 days, that he'd be willing to testify under oath that he didn't ask Comey to end the FBI's investigation into national security adviser Michael Flynn.

QUESTION: So he lied about that?

'The president surely knows if he taped me. "You may have taken it as a direction, but that's not what he said", Risch said, pressing Comey.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication", Trump tweeted, "and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" "I'm not hinting anything".

"You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry".

Karl: When will you tell us about the recordings?

This proves for the 8,457 time why Trump doesn't need to be on Twitter.

The panel asked for the tapes within two weeks. I'm not going to say I want you to pledge allegiance. ".and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

In his testimony, Comey recalled that during a private White House dinner on January 27, the president asked him for "loyalty" and to lay off his former top aide Flynn - who is under investigation over his Russian Federation ties - imploring Comey to "let this go".

Trump: I would be glad to tell him exactly what I just told you, Jon.

SEN. SUSAN COLLINS, R-Maine: I found him to be credible, candid and thorough.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: This led to another question for the president. That's another thing he said.

"Well, I didn't say that".

Another reporter yelled: "Why won't you tell us now, Mr. President?"

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: On the other side of the aisle, Democrats pounced on Comey's claims about the president. "If he were the president of a college or an important think tank, he could pursue the issues that mean the most to him and not be anxious about trying to make anyone happy". Obstruction of justice is a potentially impeachable offense. We know for a fact those exist, though.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said his committee is now focusing on verifying Comey's testimony.

And Comey said he's all for the president releasing any tapes - if they exist.

For the PBS NewsHour, I'm William Brangham.
