Trump was also asked about Comey's testimony and the supposed tapes the following day during his joint press conference with the president of Romania.

During Thursday's hearing, Comey explained his concern about his meetings with the president, saying he did not feel comfortable being in a room alone with Trump, as he felt the president was attempting to seek personal loyalty from the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, despite the department's duty to remain neutral.

Trump says Comey's testimony also vindicated him from allegations that he colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the near future", he said.

Gingrich said Comey represented the deep state "permanent opposition" to the president, who would stop at nothing to "keep their influence" and harm Trump's presidency. Comey merely testified that the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign did not extend to Trump himself during the time Comey was leading the FBI.

Comey testified Thursday that he made a decision to pass on his notes of meetings with Trump to a Columbia professor friend of his to leak to the New York Times after perceiving the Trump tapes tweet as a threat.

Trump abruptly fired Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on May 9, admitting later that the Russian Federation probe was on his mind at the time.

"I'm not hinting at anything", Trump said, but then he teased, "You'll be very disappointed". Comey said he instructed his friend, a Columbia law professor, to give the memos to The New York Times.

Comey said he shared an unclassified memo of their conversation about Flynn because he hoped it would lead to the appointment of a special counsel.

Earlier, in a characteristic early morning tweet, Trump said, "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication. and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

Trump also denied having asked Comey to pledge loyalty to him or drop the investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Mr Comey did not confirm that he believed he was sacked to prevent the investigation, but he said accusations that the FBI was in disarray were "lies, plain and simple".

"Today we reaffirm and celebrate our strategic partnership that began more than 20 years ago", Trump said. "He's a leaker", he said of Comey.

According to the report, the complaint will focus on Comey's testimony that he shared memos about his conversations with Trump with a friend, whom he also asked to pass the information to a reporter.
