Three firefighters and a resident were injured in a massive fire in MA that destroyed three multifamily homes and damaged five other buildings.

The Lawrence Fire Chief says firefighters responded to the fire Sunday afternoon.

The blaze occurred on Bennington Street and spread to Saratoga, destroying three buildings and badly damaging five more after starting in a vacant structure.

Officials say 64 residents have been displaced due to the fire that sent three firefighters and one civilian to the hospital with minor injuries.

"We immediately started striking alarms", Lawrence fire Chief Brian Moriarty said.

When the first crews arrived on the scene at 3:45 p.m., flames were already eating through three homes on Bennington Street.

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion. "Heat is a problem and we needed a lot of water", said Moriarty.

The cause remains under investigation. An area school had been opened as a shelter for people who lost their homes in the blaze. "At the moment the team continues to work to determine the origin and cause of the fire", she said.
