Just before the game Thursday night, members of the Democratic and Republican teams knelt together in prayer near second place, where Scalise would have been playing. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

Scalise, 51, who represents a district in Louisiana and is the House majority whip, had previously been listed in critical condition. "We're united not as Republicans and Democrats, but as United States representatives", Barton said at a joint news conference.

"We have controlled the internal bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized", said Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at Washington MedStar Hospital Center, briefing reporters.

Trump, who visited Scalise at the hospital on Wednesday, said the congressman was "in some trouble but he's going to be okay, we hope".

The gunman, identified by law enforcement officials as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

That's why Democrats' and Republicans' decision to go ahead with their baseball game on Thursday in Washington is so welcome. And there was a moment of silence for the victims of Wednesday's shootings.

Scalise is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit. Aging former Little Leaguers now in Congress don their spikes and dust off their gloves in a game played for claiming top dog status and to benefit several charities.

Donations were raised for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, in support of Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

"There'll be a lot of emotion at this game", Doyle said.

Mr Scalise was among five people wounded in the shooting.

C-SPAN provided coverage, and additional national television, radio and other media outlets tuned in.

"Tonight we're all team Scalise", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said.

Sava said that doctors on Thursday had operated on him to fix the broken bone. "So, I'll be taking Advils on the half-hour and trying not to hyperventilate too much".

She said Republican vitriol and caricatures of her had resulted in "calls to my home constantly, threats in front of my family, really predicated on their comments and their paid ads".

The running tally of results has Republicans and Democrats both at 39 wins, 39 losses and one tie.

"I think anybody that ever played baseball, the dream was to play in a major league stadium", Richmond said past year.
