"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said, adding that he had been downgraded to "serious" condition. Dr Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

Despite guarded optimism from Sava, another of Scalise's doctors told the Advocate that he expects his patient to walk - and even run - once he's had time to fully recover.

Scalise continues to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

Scalise suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning. "However, Scalise will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks". He has undergone several surgeries and has more ahead.

The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police after the Wednesday shooting rampage.

According to the New Orleans Advocate, sources close to the family said medical staff removed a tube inserted into Scalise's abdomen to prevent fluid from going into his lungs.

In a statement, Mika's family said he would remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.
