Kiermaier, who signed a six-year, $53.5 million contract extension during spring training, suffered the injury during Thursday night's 7-5 win against the Chicago White Sox after sliding awkwardly into first base while trying to beat out an infield hit in the fifth inning with Tampa Bay ahead 6-0.

The 2016 Gold Glove victor left the Thursday night's game against the Chicago White after jamming the hip while trying to beat out an infield hit in the fifth inning. Peralta was batting.204 with no homers or RBIs in 54 at-bats this season.

Triggs left the game when Logan Morrison upped the rays score to eight on a well struck line drive home run to the front row. As for his replacement, Mallex Smith offers major stolen base upside, and should be an immediate pickup for anyone struggling in that area. With him in the lineup in 2016 the Rays were 48-54. He could potentially remain with the Rays until 2022.

OF Mallex Smith was called up from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.

Losing Kiermaier is a tremendous blow, but the Rays are in better shape this time around than they were past year and Kiermaier's eight to ten weeks away can't come soon enough. As a result, Smith will now get the chance to become the club's everyday center fielder going forward.

Rays manager Kevin Cash made the announcement before Friday night's series opener against the Oakland A's.

"You're really happy just because there's so many games where you've got to go out there and grind it out", Cobb said. "Everything we've heard from Triple-A - the Triple-A staff, (Bulls manager) Jared Sandberg - is that he's a game-changer defensively". He played Thursday and was 0 for 4 while playing left field for the Mets' minor league in St. Lucie, Florida. With the fielder's momentum carrying him directly into the path of the runner, Kiermaier elected to go into a half-slide with his left foot jamming into the bag before careening off to the side.

The Rays are lucky to have Smith.

The Rays enter Friday 31-31, which is in contention in the AL East and certainly in the wild-card mix.
