Otto was convicted of subversion, and in March 2016 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. It should never, ever be allowed to happen.

He arrived in OH on June 13 after being held for more than 17 months.

The family of an American college student who died days after being released from North Korea in a coma says the 22-year-old "has completed his journey home".

The U.S. and North Korea have no diplomatic relations.

Assistant Secretary of State Susan Thornton said US officials are "going to give the DPRK/North Korea issue top priority in our discussions, aiming to advance concrete cooperation with China towards a peaceful resolution of the nuclear and missile threat from North Korea".

The North Koreans released Warmbier last week after 17 months of captivity.

The death of U.S. student Otto Warmbier following his incarceration in North Korea has shaken tour companies catering to thrill seekers, with several reconsidering whether to take Americans to the reclusive state. The University of Virginia student and OH native was arrested, according to North Korean media, for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan.

Trump says he spoke with Warmbier's parents and says it's "incredible what they've gone through".

Several hundred turned out at the McIntire Amphitheater Tuesday night to mourn the loss of Otto Warmbier, the University of Virginia student who died Monday.

Earlier in the day, the coroner's office said it had received Warmbier's body for an autopsy examination and was expecting to release preliminary findings later on Tuesday or on Wednesday. He remained in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness," doctors said, until his death Monday.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson repeated demands that North Korea release three other U.S. citizens it holds in detention: missionary Kim Dong Chul and academics Tony Kim and Kim Hak Song. "And then, as a second phase, try to achieve the complete dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear program", he added.

The college student died shortly after his return to OH after being held for more than 17 months. He was returned home last week in a vegetative state, and US doctors reportedly found no signs of botulism.
