Earlier this week, the president called the investigation the "greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history" and said it was being led by "some very bad and conflicted people".

Amid reports Donald Trump is unhappy with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's closeness with fired FBI Director James Comey, the top ethics lawyer from ex-President George W. Bush's administration said Saturday Vice President Mike Pence will "soon become" the next US president. According to Comey's testimony, the president even said it would be good to find out if any of Trump's "satellites" - his associates - had done anything wrong.

The Trump tweets come after the top lawyer for his transition team warned organization officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent Thursday.

The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly. Mr Rosenstein wrote a memo criticising former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey's handling of the email server scandal that was initially used by the White House to justify the firing of Mr Comey.

Terming Comey's allegations untrue, Trump later said he was willing to testify under oath but Mueller's reported investigation into the president's actions means that Trump will have to live with the ghost of another probe reaching to the White House.

Trump could be referring to the fact that it was Rosenstein who made the decision to appoint former FBI director Robert Mueller III as special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, and that Rosenstein has the power to fire Mueller for "good cause".

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

She also echoed concern that the president will try to fire Mueller and Rosenstein.

President Trump confirmed Friday that he is under investigation for firing FBI Director James Comey. That left Rosenstein in charge of the Russian Federation probe. Cohen has worked for Trump since the mid-2000s and was active in the campaign. They are Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager; Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner; Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser; Flynn; and Roger J. Stone Jr., an informal adviser to Mr. Trump.

The memo to former transition team members on Thursday also seeks specific information on five people, the Times reported.

Rosenstein also wrote a memo recommending the dismissal of Comey for his mishandling of the announcements about and the FBI investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

The tweet represented a remarkable show of frustration by a serving President, who is making no secret of his emotions as an investigation that started out as an effort to understand Russian meddling in the election appears to be moving ever closer towards his inner circle and narrowing in on his own conduct.
