The probe, which began a year ago as an investigation into Moscow's meddling in the presidential election, has since widened to include prospective money laundering by Trump associates and the possibility that people close to the President were in contact with Russian operatives throughout the campaign.

The president has also hired a private lawyer, Marc Kasowitz.

The Washington Post was the first to report the news Thursday, noting that Pence had hired former Virginia attorney general Richard Cullen to represent him. He was also the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia during former President George W. Bush's administration. The investigation is also looking into whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.

The vice president was kept in the dark for almost two weeks about Flynn's misstatements, before learning the truth in a Washington Post report. They will be National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, and retired deputy NSA director Richard Ledgett.

Pence has seldom addressed the Russian Federation issue, which has overshadowed Trump's efforts to overhaul the healthcare system, cut taxes and boost jobs - priorities that Pence has worked on intensively with Republican lawmakers.

Sessions testified under oath this week that he "did not believe" he had had any contacts with lobbyists working for Russian interests during Trump's campaign. After the election, Pence served as head of the transition team but has received criticism for not knowing a number of things that happened during the transition.

An examination of possible obstruction of justice charges was "unavoidable" given testimony by Comey, although the issue may not become the main focus of the probe, the source said. Aides to the vice president declined to say what prompted him to hire an outside lawyer. "Director Mueller's got extensive staff and authorities to investigate further".

"The Commission decides on a case-by-case basis whether legal expenses are considered "personal use" and thus are expenses that a candidate may not pay for using campaign funds", FEC guidelines read.

The vice president recently opened a leadership PAC, the Great American Committee.

He represented high profile clients such as former United States congressman Tom DeLay and Elin Nordegren, ex-wife of golfer Tiger Woods.

Do you think Pence has any connection to Russian Federation?
