Soon after his name was proposed for the new president Ram Nath Kovind, a long-time BJP worker, rushed to New Delhi and drove to Prime Minister's residence to meet Narendra Modi.

He went on to work as Private Secretary to Morarji Desai, the then Prime Minister of India, besides representing India in the United Nations in NY. A communication from the chief minister's office said the prime minister requested Naidu to garner the support of the Trinamool Congress for the NDA candidate. From being seen as a party of the upper castes and traders, Modi and Shah have tried to re-image the BJP as embracing the entire "Hindu Samaj". The Congress party declined to remark on the declaration however communicated disappointment over NDA's assignment of the Presidential applicant without talking about with restriction parties. So there is no question of mutual consent. However, he indicated differences with the BJP by saying that when BJP leaders met the Opposition, they said they will inform them "before any announcement for a consensus", but nothing to that effect happened. "I hope all will agree to the name", he said at a press conference. Dalit activist Martin Macwan said, "The reason for the choice of SC candidate by BJP is clear".

Thackeray, however, said that they would extend their support only if the decision was taken for the development of the nation. "Someone of the stature of Pranab Mukherjee, or even Sushma Swaraj or Advani-ji, may have been made the candidate", she said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed happiness over the state governor's candidature for the president's post, but stopped short of committing support to the NDA nominee. There are other big Dalit leaders in the country.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad declined to go into the merits and demerits of Kovind and did not say whether or not the opposition will field a candidate.

Bhubaneswar: BJD to extend support to NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind declares Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik. Kovind was the head of the Dalit wing of the RSS. So somewhere it is a political fight or a contest.

Kovind is reportedly close to home minister Rajnath Singh and campaigned for the BJP in the 2012 Uttar Pradesh assembly election.
