Maggie Barry: Elder abuse 'never acceptable', must be confronted

Ahead of Elder Abuse Awareness Day (today), Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine warned Ohioans to beware of signs of elder abuse. All types of elder abuse can have an impact on the health and wellbeing of the older person.

Around 53 per cent elders feel they are discriminated against in Indian society, 61 per cent elders feel people get impatient with them, since they are slow.

Columnist and author Santosh Desai termed the findings of the data "alarming", and said that improving the behaviour of people toward the elderly was one of the primary steps towards achieving a progressive society.


Along with refreshments, information for seniors on abuse, neglect and exploitation support programs will be available.

Examining elder abuse in the U.S. Chinese community sheds light on the potential cultural nuances of elder abuse.

"Dad should know I've always had a temper"- physical abuse.

"All too often incidents of elder abuse go unreported".


Most elderly people were "quite private" and "don't want to upset people", she said.

· Has the elder moved away from existing relationships and toward new associations with other "friends" or strangers who show excessive interest in his or her finances or accounts, refuse to allow the elder to speak or are reluctant to leave the senior's side during conversations? "Improvement of people plays an important role and unfortunately this is not happening", said Desai. In three quarters of those cases, abuse or neglect was a confirmed factor.

"Elder abuse is not ok and must never be tolerated".

Seniors Minister Maggie Barry has revealed research indicates around one in 10 seniors will experience some form of abuse - but only a third of those cases will be reported. "With an ageing population it's time to bring this hard issue into the open", Ms Barry says. "It is time for that to change".


On World Elder Abuse Awareness day, Ms Davies said anyone with knowledge of an incident should take action.
