Comey was also asked if he believed he was sacked because of the bureau's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election as well as Russia's ties with Trump's campaign. Comey said he didn't personally share his written accounts of his talks with Trump regarding the Russian Federation probe "for a variety of reasons", but got a friend to pass them along to a reporter because he believed it might "prompt the appointment of a special counsel".

Comey would not say in public session whether he believes the president colluded with Russian Federation during the election.

The testimony came a day after Comey said in written testimony to the Senate that private conversations with Trump made him deeply uneasy and concerned about the blurring of boundaries between the White House and a law enforcement agency that prides itself on independence. But he added that he is "sure" that special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice.

Online, NPR journalists covering national security and politics are annotating Comey's opening remarks, which the Senate Intelligence Committee released in advance on Wednesday. "Those were lies, plain and simple", Comey said. That missive referred to Comey's testimony, again in response to Burr's questions, in which he said Lynch asked him not to call his investigation into Clinton's emails an "investigation", but to refer to it as a "matter".

"That's a great question", Comey said. He said he was "stunned" by Trump's questions. "I though that might prompt the appointment of special counsel".

He also said he believes he was sacked because of his probe into Trump's alleged Russian ties.

"I'm told Kasowitz seen at Trump hotel last night celebrating, buying cigars, saying: 'We won.it's clear Trump didn't do anything wrong, '" CNN correspondent Jim Acosta tweeted Thursday. "The circumstances - first, I was alone with the president of the United States, or the president-elect, soon-to-be president", Comey said.

"My judgment was, I needed to get that out into the public square, and so I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter", Comey said. He said Trump called him at his Federal Bureau of Investigation office and asked him to join him for dinner, forcing Comey to break a date with his wife for that evening.
